THE BIG SMOKE MORALE MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY

Remote working isn’t a new concept, many businesses have been implementing a work from home strategy for many years. Remote working allows people to be more flexible as they are able to build a schedule tailored to them, fitting into their work agenda daily tasks that would otherwise postpone till the weekend.

Against initial worries one can have about remote working turning into an undisturbed internet surfing and Netflix binge watching holiday, a 2016 survey of American remote workers proved that it actually enhances productivity, despite being far from management watchful eyes.

However, when a couple of days a month become an imposed work from home policy, there are other issues that come into play and need to addressed, for the sake of the employees wellbeing. The Big Smoke Events is here to help you knuckle them down and ease the transitioning process!

What we miss of an office environment is, indeed, the social aspect - as we can no longer chat to a friend at the coffee machine or bounce back a question to our desk neighbour, we start harvesting feelings of isolation and loneliness. This is why it is important, as a small or large business, to implement daily remote social activities into your working schedule - this will give the employees the opportunity to get together and have a sense of community.

Another important issues that businesses can encounter when their workforce is remote working, is poor communication which can hinder work efficiency, leading to conflicts and tension between teams. It is vital to establish good communication between management and employees by setting daily meeting and briefings where expectations and goals are established, keeping at all times open communication by implementing channels such as slack, zoom and skype - and regular check ins.

As we no longer clock in and out of an office, it can be hard for employees to differentiate working hours from home-time so it’s important to establish a schedule that works around them. Different time zones may also have to be taken in consideration, especially if someone has gone home in Australia or New Zeland you can’t expect them to be at the 9am meeting or finish their tasks by 5pm, but it’s also important to include them in “remote social events” you may have. Adjusting the workflow and providing a flexible attitude will enable them to build a realistic and maintainable work-life balance.

Tackling issues that workers experience when shifting from an office to their homes is vital as it improves efficiency, creativity, and ultimately productivity, without compromising their work-life balance. In an article The Mental Health Foundation has highlighted the importance of the employees’ wellbeing as it increases productivity by as much as 12%.
